Does your joint with an activated carbon filter suddenly draw differently in summer? The reason is usually a combo of heat and humidity. Here's what happens inside your filter and how to get your setup through the hot season without stress.

Why does heat give your activated carbon filter a hard time?

In heat, the bond between activated carbon and harmful substances gets weaker: the higher the temperature, the more easily already-bound particles detach from the carbon again (Huang et al. 2004). A filter that spends time in a 35-degree car or in direct sun therefore doesn't work quite as cleanly as at room temperature.

Some background: activated carbon works like an extremely fine-pored catch net for harmful substances. A single gram of activated carbon has an inner surface of up to 1,000 square metres, roughly a football pitch. That's where the invisible pollutant particles dock instead of ending up in your lungs. In heat, the particles have more energy, move faster and detach more easily instead of staying put. Picture a Post-it in blazing sun: at some point the glue just doesn't hold like it used to.

Nothing dramatic, but definitely good to know.

Why is humidity the real problem?

High humidity is the main reason activated carbon filters draw harder and filter less in summer: the carbon doesn't just pull harmful substances out of the smoke, it pulls water out of the air just as greedily. The more humid the air, the worse the carbon performs (Laskar et al. 2019).

The mechanism behind it: water and pollutants fight over the same pores in the carbon. And water got there first. If the air is humid, plenty of water molecules have already made themselves at home in the pores before you even take your first pull. Meaning: less room for the stuff the filter is actually supposed to pull out.

A filter that has already soaked up moisture beforehand does less work during the session.

How do you know your filter is struggling with summer?

These are the four typical summer symptoms of an activated carbon filter in a joint:

  • The draw gets heavier or feels soggy
  • The taste seems flatter than usual
  • The filter already feels slightly damp halfway through the joint
  • Uneven burning

That's not a product defect and not an exception, it's simply physics. And it affects EVERY activated carbon filter, no matter the brand, as soon as heat and humidity come together.

How do you store activated carbon filters correctly in summer?

The short answer: sealed airtight, cool, dry and dark. Easiest in the resealable original bag or the glass jar. That keeps the carbon dry and working reliably instead of soaking up moisture before the session even starts. In detail:

  • Out of the heat. Sounds obvious, but it's the most common mistake: glovebox, windowsill, balcony at midday. No. Activated carbon filters for joints are single-use products and can't be cleaned or used multiple times. Once the carbon is saturated with moisture and condensate, its capacity is used up.
