What is activated charcoal and how on earth does it work?
At first glance, activated carbon might be mistaken for ordinary barbecue charcoal, but its intrinsic qualities and superpowers make it one of the most effective filter media known to humankind. Activated carbon, often also called medicinal charcoal, is a fine-grained, extremely porous carbon. It is derived from a variety of organic materials, including wood or peat, but most sustainably and effectively from coconut shells – our material of choice.
The crucial difference to regular charcoal lies in the manufacturing process, which makes activated charcoal a true superhero. This all happens in two main steps:

Pyrolysis (Carbonation)
Imagine the organic starting material – for example, coconut shells – being heated to extremely high temperatures in the complete absence of oxygen. This process, also called carbonization, removes water and all volatile components. What remains is a carbon-rich, but still relatively porous, basic structure.

Activation (The Birth of Superpowers)
Now comes the magical part. The resulting charcoal undergoes an "activation process." It is treated with hot gases such as steam or carbon dioxide at temperatures of up to 1000 °C. This step is absolutely crucial, as it burns a gigantic network of microscopic pores, channels, and tunnels into the charcoal. This dramatically increases the charcoal's internal surface area to an almost unimaginable degree: Just a single gram of our activated charcoal can have an internal surface area of up to 1,500 square meters – that's equivalent to the area of six tennis courts!
 
This gigantic porous surface is the secret to its incredible filtering power. Activated carbon doesn't work like a mechanical sieve that blocks particles simply because of their size. Instead, it uses a physical process called adsorption . This is not the same as absorption (like a sponge soaking up water). In adsorption, molecules adhere to the surface.
Imagine it like a giant parking lot with countless "magnetic" parking spaces. As the smoke flows through the filter, unwanted, often larger and heavier molecules—primarily tar and other harmful combustion byproducts—stick to this vast inner surface due to physical attraction (the so-called van der Waals forces). How is this coal dust formed?

The real danger lies in the fact that this barely visible fine dust, which is supposed to bind the pollutants in the filter, carries them directly into your lungs. The end pieces of an activated carbon filter are the guardians of the entire filter system. They are crucial for airflow, heat resistance, and, as already mentioned, for the fundamentally important protection against carbon dust.
Ceramic caps (The classic)
These caps, made of fired clay, are heat-resistant and robust. They have small, perforated openings that allow the smoke to pass through. They were the industry standard for a long time.
The disadvantages
Ceramics have three crucial weaknesses.
- Firstly, it conducts heat very well, which means that the smoke can become uncomfortably hot towards the end of the joint.
 - Secondly, the small holes tend to become clogged with tar and condensate, which increases the draft resistance and diminishes the enjoyment.
