Glass tip or activated carbon filter, what actually does more for your joint? The honest answer is less convenient than most debates in the community: both do different things, and neither does what you might think.

Glass versus activated carbon is a never-ending debate in the scene. The short answer: wrong question. Glass or activated carbon is like summer or pizza, two categories, zero conflict. The two solve different problems. Which ones exactly, we'll clear up now.

The key info:
  • A glass filter (glass tip) is a reusable glass mouthpiece: it cools the smoke and stays flavour-neutral, but doesn't filter out any pollutants itself.
  • Activated carbon binds gaseous pollutants like benzene through adsorption. One gram has around 1,000 m² of internal surface area.
  • Pure activated carbon barely holds back tar. What does a glass filter do in a joint?

A glass filter, often called a glass tip, is a small, reusable glass tube that goes into the end of the joint instead of a cardboard or paper filter. Its job is purely mechanical and thermal, not chemical. Glass can't do chemistry. But it does physics really well.

Glass has two real advantages:

  • Cooling. Glass conducts heat well, the smoke basically makes a quick pit stop in the glass to cool down. So it arrives noticeably cooler than with a plain paper end.
  • Reusability. A glass filter can be washed out and used again and again, which saves material over time.

What can't a glass filter do?

Filtering pollutants, for one. Glass isn't porous, it has no internal surface for molecules to latch onto. So a glass filter cools the smoke but doesn't change its chemical composition. Pollutants, smells and flavour compounds come through chemically unchanged, just cooler.

A glass filter makes your draw more pleasant, but it doesn't actually filter anything out. Glass makes the draw smooth, not clean. Important difference. Anyone after pollutant reduction needs a different material for that.

What does an activated carbon filter do in a joint?

Activated carbon works completely differently from glass: through adsorption. Sounds like a typo, but it's chemistry. Its extremely porous structure, one gram has an internal surface of around 1,000 square metres, binds gaseous molecules like benzene, formaldehyde or other volatile compounds to itself. Activated carbon selectively pulls the small, gaseous pollutants out of the smoke before they end up in your lungs.

What can't pure activated carbon do?

Short answer: cool the smoke and catch tar. The smoke stays thermally almost unchanged, just chemically cleaner. (Small exception with us: the Hybrid Supreme activated carbon filters already cool the smoke a bit via the flow filter.) On top of that, a small activated carbon filter for joints is a single-use product: once the carbon is saturated, it's done, washing or reusing doesn't work. But what the carbon does in one joint, cardboard doesn't manage in a hundred.

The second point: pure activated carbon without a mechanical component barely catches tar and fine dust, that needs a fibre layer. Does the combination also filter out THC and CBD?

No. Neither glass nor pulp nor activated carbon filters out the active compounds to any relevant degree. The reason is size: THC and CBD travel through the smoke as tiny oily droplets. They're too big for the nanopores of the activated carbon and too small to get caught on the pulp fibres. So they slip right through the middle, while the small gas molecules stay in the carbon and the large tar particles stay in the pulp. Is a glass filter better than an activated carbon filter?

Does an activated carbon filter also catch tar?
