Two years ago hardly anyone knew the term. Today static hash is on every second menu in Barcelona, pops up in every second hash video and gets googled thousands of times a month. And everyone searching wants to know the same thing: what is this stuff, and is it worth the money?
The short version:
- Static hash is hashish made without water and without solvents. The trichomes are separated from the plant material by static charge.

What is static hash?
Static hash is hashish that is made entirely without water and without solvents. It consists of separated trichomes, the tiny resin heads that sit on the flower and hold most of the active compounds and terpenes.
The special part is in the name. "Static" stands for static charge. The trichomes are not washed out with ice water and squeezed out under pressure, but collected from a surface by electrostatic attraction. What remains is a very clean, very light resin with strikingly little plant material in it.
That is exactly why the term spread so fast: static hash simply looks different from classic hash. Lighter, sandier, often almost blonde. And it melts when heated instead of charring.
How is static hash made?
The basic idea is ancient, the execution is new. People have been separating trichomes from plant material by sieving for centuries. Static tech replaces the sieve with static charge: the material is moved over a surface, the resin heads charge up and stick, the rest falls away.
The advantage over classic sieving is selectivity. A sieve lets through everything that is small enough, including fine plant dust. Static separation is more targeted. A study in the Journal of Cannabis Research (2025) reached 80 to 95 percent trichome content on the first pass with electrostatic separation, while pure sieving landed at 40 to 50 percent. That is why the purity is higher, and that is why static hash is usually a lot more expensive than ordinary dry sift.
Professionals do all of this in a dedicated cool, dry room. That is where the term "static room hash" comes from. It is not a different product, just a hint at where and how it was made. And when someone talks about a static hash machine, they usually mean exactly such a setup: a rotating drum or plate that the trichomes cling to electrostatically.
Static hash, dry sift and frozen static: what is the difference?
Three terms that get mixed up all the time. Quickly sorted:

On top of that you will see names like "double static" (run through twice, so even cleaner) and "plasma static", which depending on the vendor stands for a particularly melt-happy consistency. These terms are not standardised though. They tell you how a vendor files their product. Nothing more.
How much THC does static hash have?
Serious lab analyses usually land between 40 and 60 percent THC, with very clean batches going above that. Because there is hardly any plant material left, the active ingredient content is far above that of the original flower.
And here we have to be honest for a second: that is several times what you know from a normal joint. Anyone who doses static hash like flower will notice quickly. So take less and go slower, especially the first time. Otherwise you are glued to the sofa and the evening is over.
How do you recognise good static hash?
Four things worth looking at:
- Colour: light, sand-coloured to blonde. Clearly green means lots of plant material, so not cleanly separated.
- Consistency: crumbly and dry when cold, not sticky or greasy. A damp lump is a warning sign.
- Melt behaviour: good static bubbles when heated and melts instead of burning and leaving ash. That is why the top grade in the scene is called full melt.
- Smell: intense and clearly true to the strain. Musty or hay-like? Then it was dried or stored badly.
If you have pressed static in your hand, do not be fooled by the dark outside. Resin reacts with oxygen in the air and darkens. Break the piece open: the inside should be noticeably lighter than the outside.
Store it cool, dark and airtight. Terpenes are volatile, and they are exactly what you paid for.
Smoking static hash: this is where the filter matters
And now the part we actually know something about.
Pure resin behaves differently from flower when smoked. It melts, it drips, and what drips ends up in the filter. Anyone who has smoked a hash joint knows the moment the draw suddenly goes tight. That is not bad luck, that is physics: melted resin plus condensation clog a normal filter.
So for static hash in a joint:
- Do not pack it too tight. An overstuffed joint pulls badly as soon as the resin melts.
- Spread the resin, do not drop it in as a lump. A lump burns unevenly and runs down on you. How to do it cleanly is in our guide How to roll a joint.

Honest part two: an activated carbon filter does not make smoking healthy, and no filter catches every pollutant. What it can do is reduce pollutants in the smoke, cool the draw slightly and keep it dry. And with static hash that is not a detail, it is the difference between a clean draw to the end and a joint that seals up halfway.
Donut joints and hash holes: diameter decides
If you are heading towards fat ones, the filter decides the diameter. Our Slim Size measures 6.4 millimetres, the Plus Size 8.2 millimetres. The diameter is not an end in itself. The more resin in the joint, the more draw area the filter needs so it does not close up.
How much does static hash cost?
We deliberately do not name prices. They swing a lot and say nothing about quality anyway. What you should know: static sits noticeably above classic dry sift, and frozen static above that again. You pay for selectivity and terpene preservation, not for quantity.
A high price alone is not a seal of quality though. The four points above tell you more than any label.
