"If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work" and "there's a time for all things", as Shakespeare knew in his garden. A good trip lets us switch off and forget stress, work and everyday worries. And for our community, a chilled vacation simply comes with Hybrid Supreme activated carbon filters.

That's why we looked into which destinations make sense if smoking weed is part of your vacation. This article takes you to North, Central and South America, to the countries where cannabis is legal or at least decriminalized. Staying in Europe instead? Then check out our overview Cannabis on your EU holiday 2026.

Key facts at a glance:
  • Uruguay legalized cannabis in 2013 as the first country in the world. Only residents are allowed to buy it, though.
  • Canada has been fully legal since 2018: You buy in licensed dispensaries, from age 18, 19 or 21 depending on the province.
  • In the USA, 24 states plus Washington, D.C. have legalized recreational use, mostly from age 21. Under federal law, cannabis remains illegal.
  • In many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, small amounts are decriminalized, but buying is often still illegal.
  • Never take cannabis across borders or onto a plane. That also applies between two countries where it's legal.
⚠️ Legal notice

Updated: September 2026. This article is intended exclusively for adults and is for information purposes only. It is not legal advice and not an invitation to buy or consume cannabis. Laws and how they are enforced change constantly and can vary by region. Before you travel, check with official sources such as embassies or local authorities. Taking cannabis across national borders is a criminal offense almost everywhere. Hybrid Filter makes smoking accessories and does not sell cannabis. Smoking is always harmful to your health. Filters can reduce the risk, but not eliminate it (harm reduction). You are responsible for complying with local laws.

High on vacation: Cannabis culture in the Americas

The history of cannabis and its forms, hashish and marijuana, runs through every continent and culture. Today, the plant plays an increasingly important role in the Americas. The cannabis market in South America is even booming, according to Statista with expected revenue growth of 2.23% per year until 2029. We've listed the most important countries for you and collected the most interesting facts.

Latin America and the Caribbean: Green light under palm trees

From Uruguay to Colombia: The legal situation in South America varies a lot.

Many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are fairly relaxed about cannabis. Still, the law is the law. Here are the most popular destinations.

Uruguay: Pioneer of legal cannabis

In 2013, Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize marijuana. Growing, selling and consuming are allowed, but only for residents. Tourists have no official access to the market. In tourist areas, though, you'll come across grow shops or head shops selling accessories.

Important: Buying weed as a foreigner remains illegal. Uruguay is also one of the most expensive countries in South America, so plan your travel budget accordingly.

Argentina: At your own risk

In Argentina, private consumption of small amounts has not been a criminal offense since a Supreme Court ruling in 2009. But this only applies within your own four walls and remains a legal gray area. Smoking in cafés or on the street is off limits. The province of Mendoza has the first offers for cannabis tourism, such as farm visits and tours about cultivation and science. You're not allowed to consume there, though, recreational use is explicitly excluded. Jujuy focuses mainly on medical cannabis and research.

Our tip: Even if the smell is in the air in cities like Buenos Aires, don't ask about it openly. The police usually only tolerate tiny amounts in private spaces, and the quality of black market weed varies a lot. If smoking is part of your vacation, Argentina isn't really your country.

Belize: Relaxed, but expensive

Belize allows possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis, but smoking is only permitted on private property. In the tourist centers you'll often meet laid-back people. The crime rate is relatively high, though, and police and security staff are usually present at popular spots.

Belize is no bargain: Many things cost more than in neighboring countries. At least converting prices is easy: 1 Belize dollar equals 0.50 US dollars.

Ecuador: Cheap, but a gray area

Ecuador scores with a low daily budget of around 25 to 35 euros. Possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis for personal use is decriminalized, anything more is officially illegal. The country is considered a relatively safe destination.

Watch out: As a tourist, you should never ask openly for weed. Illegal sales are punished, often with long prison sentences. Enjoy the country and its people instead, and skip smoking to be on the safe side.

Peru: Strict and unsafe

In Peru, cannabis is officially prohibited. Up to 8 grams in your own home is considered a minor matter, anything more is prosecuted. Crime rates are high, especially in big cities and on public transport. Without a local guide, we strongly advise against asking for directions to a dealer.

Peru is not suitable for a cannabis vacation. Be especially careful and get well informed if you travel there.

Mexico: Changing times

Possession of small amounts for personal use is decriminalized, for marijuana up to 5 grams. If you carry more, you risk being charged with dealing and up to 15 years in prison. Since June 2021, recreational use of cannabis in Mexico is legal in principle: Adults may possess up to 28 grams and grow six plants, but only with an individually requested amparo or license. There is no regulated sale through licensed shops yet. Most people therefore buy on the informal market, with all the risks that come with it.

Warning: Armed groups are active in some regions of Mexico. Stay away from the black market. In tourist areas, the authorities are very alert, and police checks can end badly.

Jamaica: Relaxed spirit, strict reality

Jamaica is known for palm trees, reggae and a relaxed attitude to weed. Since 2015, up to 56 grams of cannabis are no longer a criminal offense, and Rastafarians may use it for religious purposes. Smoking in public is still prohibited, though. If you smoke marijuana in public, you can get into trouble with the police.

Jamaica's prisons are known to be tough. So enjoy the atmosphere, but stick to the rules. Small amounts are often tolerated, but don't show off.

Colombia: Medically legal, privately tolerated

Colombia legalized medical cannabis cultivation in 2015. Privately, up to 20 plants may be grown and 20 grams of flower possessed without criminal prosecution.

Watch out: Colombia struggles with illegal drug trafficking. Photos related to drugs or political topics can get you into trouble, so better put the camera away. And most importantly: Don't bring any cannabis into the country, not even small amounts.

Costa Rica: Decriminalized, but not legal

In Costa Rica, consuming small amounts for personal use is decriminalized. The police usually just confiscate small amounts, but there is no official limit. Selling remains prohibited. Since March 2022, medical cannabis has been legal, recreational use has not: A bill to legalize it was declared unconstitutional. Home growing is not clearly regulated by law, so don't count on it.

Careful: Don't buy weed from street vendors on the beach. The stuff is usually low quality and overpriced. Better ask at your accommodation or trusted locals, and don't just light up anywhere in public.

North America: A patchwork of laws

Map of North America showing the continent's location on the globe
Canada fully legal, the USA a patchwork: That's how different North America is.

In North America, Canada has fully legalized cannabis, while in the USA each state has its own rules. In many ways, cannabis policy there is already further ahead than in Europe. What matters most for you: Where can you enjoy a chilled vacation? Here's the situation:

Canada: Pioneer of legalization

Since 2018, buying and consuming cannabis in Canada has been legal. You can shop in licensed dispensaries, from age 19 in most provinces, 18 in Alberta and 21 in Quebec. In public, you may carry up to 30 grams.

Important: Pay attention to where smoking is allowed. In many provinces, it's only permitted in certain zones or private areas. Canada even has specialized cannabis tour operators if you want to dive deeper into the topic.

USA: A patchwork of laws

Under federal law, cannabis is illegal in the USA, including in national parks. Still, 24 states and the capital Washington, D.C. have legalized recreational use, almost always from age 21. Here's where smoking weed is allowed:

Tips for traveling with cannabis

Traveling with medical cannabis is only possible with medical documents and a prescription. For recreational cannabis, there's one clear rule: don't take any with you. Apart from that, these points will help:

  • Do your research: Find out about taboos and cultural dos and don'ts before you leave.
  • Ask first: Check with your hotel, accommodation or restaurant whether smoking is allowed.
  • Take your trash with you: Butts and filters don't belong on the ground. The easiest way is a pocket ashtray.
  • Be considerate: Make sure you don't bother anyone. Locals often appreciate respectful questions about the topic.

Tip: With our Hybrid Supreme filters, your smoke is smoother on vacation too 😉 You'll get them at the best price in our bundles.
